This morning I made a donation to Hurricane Maria recovery efforts in Puerto Rico. I did so through One America Appeal, an organization launched by the five living former presidents. This appeal is unusual in that every penny of donations goes directly to relief efforts. I understand that non-profits have expenses, but I try to avoid some where the organizational costs – often with exorbitant salaries – deduct from the impact of a gift.
I’ve been horrified by the destruction wrought by hurricanes this year, but none has saddened me as what I have seen from Puerto Rico. The president’s callous and derogatory remarks as well as the incredibly slow and underwhelming pace of assistance from the government with meeting basic human needs on the island infuriate me yet again, but anger is only as good as the action it initiates. My fellow Puerto Rican Americans – he does not speak for us. We DO care – please hold on.
